The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) is the foremost Pan-African multilateral financial institution devoted to financing and promoting intra- and extra-African trade. The Bank was established in October 1993 by African governments, African private and institutional investors, and non-African investors. Its two basic constitutive documents are the Establishment Agreement, which gives it the status of an international organization, and the Charter, which governs its corporate structure and operations.

Helen Brume spotlighted how Afreximbank is actively equipping SMEs to scale green projects through innovative financing tools—including intermediary and concessional lending, de-risking facilities, blended finance instruments, and strategic investments in Special Economic Zones like GDIZ - Glo-Djigbé Industrial Zone in Benin and Adétikopé in Togo. She also emphasized the role of capacity-building platforms like the Africa Trade Gateway and Quality Assurance Centres in helping SMEs meet global standards and access new markets. Through its SME-focused ESDP, Afreximbank has already approved $520 million in financing, with a goal to reach 10,000 SMEs by 2026. From green bonds to venture funds, the Bank’s approach is clear: empower Africa’s entrepreneurs to lead the continent’s low-carbon, climate-resilient transformation. The challenge is urgent.
